Sleep, or lack thereof, is a public health challenge around the world whatever your postal code or demographic profile.
Can technology help us bridge the sleep deprivation gap, or is technology destined to ruin our mind-body-spirit health?
At CES 2025, you won’t be surprised that it’s a bull market for sleep-tech across a growing portfolio of device and product types. Beyond the always visible display of new-and-improved beds which have tempted CES-goers into cat-nap trials for many years on the show floor, we find many form-factors for sleep assistance this year.
First, some context from the National Sleep Foundation which help a media “power session” yesterday on Media Day 2 at #CES2025. NSF revealed new research into sleep health, calling out that about 6 in 10 adults say that not getting enough sleep has a negative impact on their work productivity — employers be aware.
The National Sleep Foundation celebrates the organization’s 35th anniversary since its founding, and CES 2025 marks NSF’s 10th CES hosting the SleepTech Summit with the mission for each of us to achieve in their words, our “Best Slept Self®.”
NSF conducts a perennial Sleep in America poll, most recently focusing on the very real challenge of politics as a risk factor for sleep health.
NSF published well-timed research in October 2024 on the impact of current (at the time) national politics on sleep health.
The vertical bar chart from the study illustrates how political stress negatively impacts sleep for many people — comparing sleep duration and sleep quality differences between people who have/have not experienced a negative impact on sleep from the U.S. Presidential election. [Sidebar: I have a keen interest in this topic, most recently diving into the American Psychological Association’s research into Stress in America on the issue of political stress and social divides in the U.S.].
With that context in mind, you can appreciate the business opportunity that sleep deprivation and the Holy Grail of sleep-health manifest at CES 2025. Here’s but a brief portrait I curated of examples I’m looking at during the conference, among several others in the category and other devices embedding many sensors including but not limited to sleep.
But wait! There’s more (beyond tech)
Among solutions for sleep not on exhibit at CES 2025 is a growing market for wellness travel that has a sleep-health and wellness tourism bent, covered in Conde Nast Traveler this month.
“Hotels have long promised guests a good night’s rest. But that’s become a serious challenge considering around one in three adults struggle to get enough Zs. Sleep hygiene was a top priority last year, inspiring tons of resorts to design dedicated suites and retreats to help insomniacs embrace better habits. Experts predict the sleep sector will expand by over $400 billion through 2028, and the travel industry is continuing to invest big, enlisting sleep scientists and embracing high-tech gadgets to help guests nod off. Last month, Hyatt announced a new Science Behind Sleep video series in collaboration with Headspace’s mindfulness teacher, Dora Kamau….”
Thus, if sleep is in your wheelhouse, do explore the category broadly and inclusively — depending on your market-space and intent, there will be many ways to on-ramp for sleep health which impacts holistic health for immunity, mental health, heart health, and energy at home and in the workplace.
Here’s to your health-ful, quality sleep!
